Primary

Primary education builds on our foundational classes and refers to our students in grades two through five. It is during these years that we begin more formally teaching the subjects of Religion, Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts (including Handwriting, Spelling, and Phonics). We also teach music, art, choir, and physical education for each grade.

A common approach to primary education is to focus on teaching children to read so that later they can read to learn. This is a building block type approach that is fairly sound. Almost all of the instruction we offer builds on previous learning experiences. However, we believe that children learn about their world and build their knowledge base through reading and being read to, beginning almost from birth! We also believe that teaching the necessary reading skills such as comprehension continues well past the elementary ages.

Differentiating Instruction

It is important that during the primary years we work to develop an idea of how each child learns best so that they may gain the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to advance their learning. We recognize that children do not develop at the same rate nor learn in all the same ways. Each child is unique and it is our job as educators to address those needs appropriately.
